Time to put to rest another false impression that county government is getting bigger. In FY 2004-2005, there were 55 departments. The proposed budget for FY 2009-2010 calls for 55 departments. Five years ago, we counted 30,036 employees. The proposed budget calls for 27,595. That’s an 8% reduction in workforce. We are doing more with less!

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) was ranked among the top fire departments across North America according to the 2008 National Run Survey published in the July and August 2009 issues of Firehouse Magazine.
Miami-Dade’s Aerial 19 currently holds the distinction of taking the lead as the busiest aerial in nation. The results were based MDFR’s response to 5,238 calls last year, a difference of 600 responses above the second-place aerial out of Chicago and a difference of more than 1,100 calls above the fifth-ranked aerial in New York City. Thursday, August 06, 2009 9:45:00 AM How far have we come?
Miami-Dade County has come a long way in a short time because of the way we have invested in our services. How far have we come?
o Ten years ago, the crime rate for serious crime was 50% higher than it is now.
o Five years ago, about one-third fewer people used our park and recreation facilities, and 40 percent fewer used our libraries.
o Five years ago, people had to slog through the blue pages to get help or answer a question. Today, they can simply call 3-1-1.
o Five years ago, potholes didn’t get fixed until someone called them in. Today, about 98% of them are fixed before a problem is reported.
It’s easy to overlook the services the County provides. There’s always room for improvement, but it’s important to consider how far we have come.

Monday, July 20, 2009 9:59:00 AM Spurred by events, Greater Miami hotel room occupancy grows by 6.2% week ending July 4th
Greater Miami enjoyed the second highest occupancy rate growth in the country during the week ending on the July 4th holiday. Data from Smith Travel Research reports that Miami had the second largest year-over-year growth in hotel occupancy in the nation. Miami's room occupancy was up 6.2% from the same week last year with 66.9% of Miami's rooms filled. Three major events which drew large numbers of visitors -- the 2009 USA Volleyball Girls Junior Olympics, VII Pan American Women's Volleyball Cup Championship, and the American Black Film Festival -- contributed to this occupancy boost. The report is good news for Miami at a time when the national hotel occupancy average fell 6% year-over-year to end the week at 57.7%.

Miami-Dade County, like much of the nation, is dealing with its worst economy in decades. What did the County do when the tax base was strong? Plenty! Significant enhancements took place over the past five years: • 8 new fire stations • 13 new libraries. • 62 new park facilities. • South Terminal at Miami International Airport • 2 new cruise terminals at the Port of Miami. • Provided additional funding to our Juvenile Assessment Center… and reduced juvenile arrests by 48 percent. • Added more police officers, school crossing guards, and 9-1-1 operators. • Created the 3-1-1 Answer Center which takes more than one million calls a year. • Cut the time it takes to pick up bulky waste in half – from two weeks to 6 days. • Replaced more than 37,000 street name and traffic signs each year. • Reduced pothole complaints from 5 days to one. • Repaired 25,000 feet of sidewalks. • Replaced all of the trees lost after Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma • Broke ground on the first major Metrorail expansion in 20 years. • Metrozoo’s new Amazon & Beyond exhibit. • . . . and more!
