Mayor's Project Management Workshops
The Community and Economic Development Initiative assists nonprofit community based organizations (CBOs) to enhance their programs and capacities. Miami-Dade County realizes the value of many of these organizations in addressing important community issues.
Through this Initiative, we are assisting nonprofits and CBOs effectively reach their goals. Representatives of these organizations are being invited to attended free workshops that provide technical assistance and training for delivering community services, as well as information on complying with local, state and federal program policies and procedures.
The Initiative kicked-off on October 31, 2007, with a one-day hands-on workshop, Mayor's Community and Economic Development Workshop, which focused on nonprofit effectiveness and capacity building. Other workshops this year include: Mayor's Strategic Planning Workshop, February 22; Mayor's Small Business Development Expos held March 5 and 26, and April 16; and, the Mayor's Project Management Workshop, April 9 and 23.
The nonprofit community continues to grow in Miami-Dade County. According to US Census data, as of May 2006 Miami-Dade County had 7,354 nonprofits registered - a 16 percent increase from 2002's total of 5,671. The total value to of registered nonprofits was reported to the IRS in May 2006 as more than $41.3 million. These organizations support approximately 76,741 jobs in this County. As the role of community based organizations continues to grow in our community and government revenues continue to decrease, the effectiveness of these organizations becomes even more critical.
The Mayor's Community and Economic Development Initiative and the workshop series would not be possible without the help of the following sponsors: Citi, Great Florida Bank, Health Foundation of South Florida, BankAtlantic, and Bank of America.
Several Miami-Dade County Departments are supporting this Initiative including: the Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED), Office of Strategic Business Management (OSBM), South Florida Workforce and Team Metro. Community partners include: Center on Nonprofit Effectiveness (C-One), Legal Services of Greater Miami, the Alliance on Human Services, Chase Marketing Group, Miami Dade College, and Neighbors and Neighbors Association (NANA).
Our thanks to sponsors and partners who are investing in this County by supporting the Community and Economic Development Initiative. Together, we are building a better Miami-Dade.
