We are celebrating Haitian Independence Month in honor of the countless contributions Haitians are making in our community. During this celebration, we hope to enhance cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding and to promote interaction within our County's multi-ethnic society.
As someone who came to the United States from Cuba as a child, I too can relate to the transition and plight immigrants face upon reaching the United States. I realize that the road has not always been an easy one. However, it is important to point out that despite the obstacles we faced -- with perseverance and relentless determination -- we succeeded in our new homeland.
Haitians have contributed and continue to contribute to the growth of our County. They are the second largest immigrant group in Miami-Dade and play a significant role in our community's fabric.
I want to acknowledge Assistant Nadia Pierre and her fellow curator, Mr. Ady Jean Gardy, who put so much heart and effort into the Haitian Heritage Exhibit featured in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center this month. I also want to thank Exhibit and Haitian Heritage Celebration sponsor Air France for its kind generosity.
Merci,

Mayor Carlos Alvarez
