The Emerging Leader - Benjamin Dietch

Miami Beach Senior High School, 10th grade
Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, District 4

Benjamin understands how holding, learning, and playing an instrument, and listening to music can change someone's life. And his love of music has led him to create "Music for Memories," an organization that collects gently used and new instruments, and donates them to public schools thoughout Miami-Dade County. This project started in 2011 when he was in sixth grade because he was concerned that students were not being provided with the opportunity to play music or participate in music classes at their schools. Since then, his organization has expanded, and he now picks up and delivers instruments to schools around the County. Music for Memories has donated 135 instruments to 19 different schools.

Benjamin also teaches guitar to P.A.L. program particpants in Miami Beach and has volunteered every year for the past 5 years to bring music to Shadowlawn Elementary School. He is on the football team at his school and plays in the jazz band.

Benjamin would like to study music in college and continue to provide musical opportunities to his community.

The Unstoppable Scholar - Tania Perez

Jose Marti Mast 6-12 Academy, 12th grade

Tanis is striving to become the first female in her family to attend college. She founded the National English Honor Society at her school, becoming the club's first President, and has served as the Student Government Association Class President for the past two years, National Honor Society Treasurer, and member of Key Club and Women of Tomorrow.

Tania is also her school's Relay for Life Team Leader. Under her leadership, the team achieved the highest amount ever raised since it was formed. She is also a Neurology Child Life Department Volunteer and Urgent Care Center Volunteer at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, as well as a Lion's South Florida Diabetes Youth Camp Counselor.

Tania received a Special Merit from the David Fairchild Challenge for thoughful organization and knowledge of plants through the Plant Exploration Writing Challenge. And she was awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award and the Community Service Award at her school for having the highest number of community service hours in her grade level.

Tania's Advisor describes her as a top scholar and belives she has the potential to be one of the school's first graduate to attend an Ivy League University.

The Pursuer of Excellence - Jessica Lamour

School of Advaced Studies - North Campus, 12th grade
Vice Chairmwoman Audrey M. Edmonson, District 3

Jessica is proud of her Haitian-American heritage and wants to demonstrate to the world that a student of Haitian descent can thrive at the highest academic levels. Jessica has a 4.87 weighted GPA.

Jessica created "Shine," a program through which she and a group of friends provide orpans and foster children with creative activities. She participates in "Midway to Success," which is committed to sharing information about the college admissions process with as many high school students in Miami-Dade County as possible. Its ultimate goal is to encourage students in inner-city neighborhoods to attend college and provide them with the resources and information necessary to do so. She also volunteers at the Haitian American Nurses Association at local health fairs and fundraising efforts.

Jessica plays basketball, cheerleads, dance, and debates at her school. She also became interested in participating in mock trails so she joined the Economic Advocacy Trust's Teen Court as a Youth Attorney.

Jessica hopes to be nominated for the Silver Knight Award by her school. She aspires to study Political Science in college and become an attorney. It would be her dream to attend Harvard College, Emory University, or Duke University.
