The Pursuer of Excellence - Briana Miranda
South Dade Senior High School, 12th grade
District 9, Commissioner Moss
While maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, Briana manages a hectic International Baccalaureate (IB) schedule and extracurricular activities, including serving as the Captain of her Swim Team, the President of the Math Honor Society, a member of the French Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, the National Honor Society, and Key Club.
She also tutors other students who are struggling to read at their grade level and lends a hand at any type of fundraising event, such as volunteering for Gateway Environment Kindergarten through Eighth Grade Parent Teacher Association events to help raise money for children to prosper in her school and to help teachers purchase supplies and uniforms for their students.
Briana has participated in swimming and dance for 15 years and encourages students to keep moving and improving their lives. She has never missed a day of school and, because of her example, her two younger siblings also have perfect attendance. She also works part-time at Walgreens and hopes to become a pharmacist. She plans on setting up a college scholarship fund to be awarded to a swimmer who is also an IB student with perfect attendance, like herself.
The Unstoppable Scholar - Christopher Naranjo
St. Brendan Catholic High School, 12th grade
District 6, Commissioner Sosa
Christopher has profound hearing loss, which makes school more difficult for him, but he continues to attend regular high school classes. He attended the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program from the time he was 2 years old until he was in second grade. He aims to give back to the school that made a difference in his life.
Christopher is a Boy Scout and just completed all his requirements for his Eagle Scout Award, which he will receive on Sept. 14. He recently led his Boy Scout troop on his Eagle Scout service project, which involved landscaping, planting a vegetable garden, repairing playground equipment, and refurbishing the playground at the University of Miami Mailman Center-Debbie School.
The Emerging Leader - Sofia Santa-Cruz
School For Advanced Studies – South, 11th grade
District 8, Commissioner Bell
Sofia is a volunteer at Deering Estates, the Girl Scouts of America Venturing Crew 314 Vice President of Programming for 2012-2013, and a teen advisor for Girl Scouts Troop 350. She was on the Principal’s Honor Roll during her freshmen and sophomore years. She recently attended the National Leadership Student Conference for Law in Washington D.C., where she participated in team building opportunities.
Sofia has learned that, even with careful planning, things do go wrong and strength of character comes from how you deal with those obstacles, and that she can be a good leader with the right attitude. She has earned the respect of her friends, advisors, co-volunteers, and camp staff, as well as the kids that she works with every day.
She is currently working towards the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Congressional Award. She is also working on a two year training program for an 8k obstacle run.Back to Top Page Last Edited: Wed Oct 9, 2013 8:36:55 AM
