South Florida Workforce and the Miami-Dade Education Partnership announce Summer Employment Program

South Florida Workforce today announced the opening of registration for the Career Pathway Compact Summer Employment Program, created to provide young adults from low-income families the opportunity to enhance their work-readiness skills while also earning summer income.  The program is part of the Miami-Dade Education Partnership unveiled by Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez during his February 28, 2012 State of the County Address.

The eight to ten week education internship program will provide participants with entry-level positions within governmental agencies, local businesses, and community-based non-profit organizations. Program selection will be done by lottery for candidates who have met all program requirements.

"Connecting our students to our partners in the private and non-profit sectors is key to growing jobs and to keeping our most talented students from leaving our community for career opportunities elsewhere," said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.   "Enhancing the work-readiness skills of our young adults through special programs like the one created by South Florida Workforce is critical to the continued economic growth of our community," he added.

Miami-Dade County, in conjunction with South Florida Workforce, is making $1.5 million dollars available for the program. "We appreciate the support from the County and Mayor Gimenez," said Rick Beasley, Executive Director of South Florida Workforce. "This program will provide college age students from our disadvantaged communities with an invaluable opportunity to participate in paid internships with local business this summer, and in the process become better equipped for future job opportunities," he added.
