Assistant Secretary of State William R.Brownfield travels to Miami and participates in County events
Assistant Secretary Brownfield will join U.S. Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Ted Deutch, Mario Diaz-Balart, Trey Radel; Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, County Commissioners and PortMiami Director Bill Johnson at August 28 Press Conference; and Miami-Dade Police Department at August 29 Graduation Ceremony
(MIAMI, August 23, 2013) – Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) William R. Brownfield will travel to Miami, Florida to address developing security challenges in the Caribbean. Brownfield will cover the State Department’s efforts to confront those challenges, including through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, a partnership among the United States and 13 Caribbean nations to improve public safety and security and promote social justice, and the important role that state, county, and local governments can play. This partnership will also improve trade and commerce among the participating countries.
On August 28, Assistant Secretary Brownfield will take part in a press conference with Mayor of Miami-Dade County Carlos A. Gimenez, County Commissioners, and Members of the South Florida Congressional delegation. A partnership agreement will be signed between PortMiami and the State Department for future cooperation.
On August 29, Assistant Secretary Brownfield will participate in a graduation event for Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) officers and thank the department for its contributions to INL’s programs. Since 2012, the MDPD has assisted the State Department with training and mentoring of foreign police and law enforcement officials, including officers from Haiti. Assistant Secretary Brownfield will meet with a group of Haitian National Police officers currently in Miami for MDPD-led training.
INL has partnerships with more than 60 state, county, and local entities around the United States. Partners receive specialized training from the Department of State and develop key international relationships to fight crime in their own communities. These partnerships enable INL to utilize the knowledge and expertise of actively serving police officers, critical infrastructure experts, corrections officials, and legal professionals to train, advise, and mentor foreign officials on behalf of the United States.
