Miami-Dade County Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month By Going Pink

Kickoff on Tuesday, October 1st at Board of County Commissioners Meeting


(MIAMI, September 27, 2013) – Miami-Dade County government is going pink in October.  The County is hosting and supporting a number of events to raise awareness of breast cancer, including a special presentation at the Board of County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.   

“We are committed to raising awareness of breast cancer, and join all members of our community and our loved ones in supporting programs that help save lives and give hope,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. 

“Hope and awareness are the greatest weapons we have in the fight against breast cancer, which affects so many women every year,” said Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa.  “As a breast cancer survivor, I am committed to supporting the County’s ongoing efforts to promote early detection and prevention and to lend a hand to organizations that are championing this cause, because we can make a difference.”

“I am delighted that Miami-Dade County annually takes a leadership role in breast cancer awareness,” said Miami-Dade County District 4 Commissioner Sally A. Heyman.  “As a survivor, I intend to participate in the walk for my 20th year.”

Among the County’s events and occasions are:

Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at 9:30 a.m., in the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1 Street, 2nd Floor Commission Chambers, in Miami.  Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa and Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, along with the American Cancer Society, will make a special presentation about the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on November 9, 2013, at Marlins Park.

A variety of pink items will be sold at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Bazaar on Friday, October 4, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in the Stephen P. Clark Center Lobby, 111 NW 1 Street, in Miami.

Miami-Dade County Wellness Fair on Friday, October 18, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in the Stephen P. Clark Center Lobby, 111 NW 1 Street, in Miami.  Residents and visitors will have an opportunity to participate in fun and engaging wellness activities coordinated by County departments, non-for profit organizations and local vendors, who will share products and educational material to promote healthy lifestyles.

Miami-Dade County is sponsoring the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk to fight breast cancer and provide hope to all people facing the disease.  County teams comprised of employees are participating in the fundraising event.  The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is taking place on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at Marlins Park, 501 NW 16 Avenue, in Miami.  For more information or to sign up for the walk, visit www.MakingStridesWalk.org/Miami.

A Miami-Dade Police Department vehicle, Public Works and Waste Management tractor trailer, and Transit Metrobus have been painted pink. 

Miami-Dade County’s website, www.miamidade.gov, will be pink throughout the month of October.

The Stephen P. Clark Center Lobby will be pink throughout the month of October.
