MIA closing out successful 2014 with milestone 100th air carrier

(MIAMI, December 15, 2014) – Miami International Airport is finishing the year on a high note, as the global gateway will welcome its 100th air carrier later this week, further adding to its diverse service lineup. In the process, MIA will achieve a noteworthy milestone, becoming the only U.S. airport to currently offer passenger and cargo service on 100 different carriers and outpacing major American air hubs including Chicago O’Hare International Airport, New York’s JFK International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.

On Tuesday, Finland’s flag carrier, Finnair, begins seasonal service between Miami and Helsinki as MIA’s 99th carrier.  Beginning on Saturday, December 20, domestic low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines will offer regular scheduled service from Miami to five U.S. destinations, marking MIA’s milestone 100th air carrier. With the additions of Finnair and Frontier, Miami International Airport’s roster of air carriers will be comprised of:

“Adding our 100th air carrier – and being the only U.S. airport to offer so many passenger and cargo options – is a great way to cap off another fantastic year of progress at MIA,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “Our 100-strong airline list is every bit as diverse as the community that we’re so proud to serve and support. More importantly, these carriers help drive our local economy and keep our community connected to the world.”

MIA’s standing as America’s second-busiest airport for international passengers is reflected in the 42 scheduled foreign carriers that serve the global gateway. Likewise, the airport’s top U.S. ranking for international freight is supported by a total of 26 scheduled cargo carriers, more than half of which are foreign.
