Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department announce the hiring of new public safety officers

(MIAMI, March 23, 2015) – Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Director J.D. Patterson and the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR) Director Marydell Guevara are pleased to announce new officer hiring for 2015 and in coming years.

MDPD police academy classes will begin this June and September. The June class will consist of 45 non-certified applicants, while the September class will consist of 45 certified/lateral police officers. Upon graduation, the starting salary will be approximately $50,000.

Also this year, MDCR plans to hire 264 employees, 95 sworn officers and 169 civilians. The starting salary for sworn employees is approximately $43,000, while the average starting salary for civilians is approximately $30,000.

Both MDPD and MDCR have developed hiring plans that prioritize filling positions to ensure the departments are adequately staffed and able to serve the community. The plans, approved by Mayor Gimenez, demonstrate the County’s dedication to public safety.

“Public safety is my top priority as the Mayor of Miami-Dade County,” said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “We have turned the corner. Better days are ahead for Miami-Dade County because our budget outlook continues to improve. My administration is determined to have world-class police and corrections departments for the world-class community Miami-Dade County has become.”

“It is extremely important to continually hire, train, and retain a viable workforce of quality officers to provide public safety to our dynamic, diverse community,” said Miami-Dade Police Department Director J.D. Patterson.

“As Director of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, it is imperative our facilities are well staffed to ensure the highest level of service and safety to Corrections staff, inmates, and public,” said Director Marydell Guevara.
