Above is a an exclusive picture of a rare cataract surgery on a gorilla at MetroZoo that took place this past Friday. Josephine, a 42 year old 160-pound gorilla, is a resident at Miami MetroZoo was in perfect shape except one thing, she was quickly going blind. Doctors at the zoo located two thick bilateral cataracts in Josephine's eyes, just like humans get. So her doctors decided to fix them, just like humans do. This particular procedure is a rarely preformed and has only been done in two other zoos in the U.S. Since it was a delicate surgery and the need for limited activity and people in the operating room, Miami-Dade TV cameras captured the event for all news outlets both local and national.

Happy Birthday MIA

On September 15, 1928 one of Pan Am's two Sikorsky S-38 amphibian aircraft took off from a dirt runway at Pam American Field, etched out of 116 acres of bush and palm trees. With its eight-passenger quota and 340 pounds of mail, air time to New York was about 16 hours. The 90-by-100-foot hangar, its workshop and the first Pan Am offices required an investment of nearly $500,000. Floodlights were installed for night landings. This was the first scheduled flight from what is now Miami International Airport.

Miami-Dade County Budget FY 09/10

On September 18, 2009, Miami-Dade County government passed a budget that does not raise the property tax rate and protects many of the programs and services that our residents demand and depend upon.
Eight years since one of the most defining tragedies in our nation's history

It’s hard to believe it has been seven years since one of the most defining tragedies in our nation's history. Our nation and our way of life have changed drastically since then. Each of us remembers what we were doing and where we were at this time, on this day, eight years ago. On September 11th, 2001, our generation was reminded that the values of life and liberty cannot be taken for granted.

Looking back, it seems like just yesterday we all witnessed an unspeakable act of terror. Yet in the face of terror, we saw incredible acts of compassion, bravery and sacrifice, particularly our public safety professionals. That is why September 11th will always be a day of significant importance to our fire and police brotherhood.

We remember the selfless devotion of the courageous men and women who came to aid of their fellow man. We remember their ultimate sacrifice to defend and protect our nation from those who seek to destroy it. We also remember those whose tomorrows were stolen from them and families torn apart. Eight years later, our thoughts and prayers are with those who must face each day without a husband, wife or child.
Together, on this somber day, we think back with sadness, we draw strength from each other and, we look ahead with hope.

Carlos Alvarez
Miami-Dade County Mayor

Doing More with Less

Time to put to rest another false impression that county government is getting bigger. In FY 2004-2005, there were 55 departments. The proposed budget for FY 2009-2010 calls for 55 departments. Five years ago, we counted 30,036 employees. The proposed budget calls for 27,595. That’s an 8% reduction in workforce.
The Best of the Best!

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) was ranked among the top fire departments across North America according to the 2008 National Run Survey published in the July and August 2009 issues of Firehouse Magazine.

Miami-Dade’s Aerial 19 currently holds the distinction of taking the lead as the busiest aerial in nation. The results were based MDFR’s response to 5,238 calls last year, a difference of 600 responses above the second-place aerial out of Chicago and a difference of more than 1,100 calls above the fifth-ranked aerial in New York City. Aerial 19 also was also listed as the 26th busiest non-transport unit, responding to 2,997 calls.

Firehouse Magazine is a leading publication in the fire-rescue industry, has compiled data for the past 28 years based on information provided by departments in the US and Canada.
How far have we come?

Miami-Dade County has come a long way in a short time because of the way we have invested in our services. How far have we come?

o Ten years ago, the crime rate for serious crime was 50% higher than it is now.

o Five years ago, about one-third fewer people used our park and recreation facilities, and 40 percent fewer used our libraries.

o Five years ago, people had to slog through the blue pages to get help or answer a question. Today, they can simply call 3-1-1.

o Five years ago, potholes didn’t get fixed until someone called them in. Today, about 98% of them are fixed before a problem is reported.

It’s easy to overlook the services the County provides. There’s always room for improvement, but it’s important to consider how far we have come.

Spurred by events, Greater Miami hotel room occupancy grows by 6.2% week ending July 4th

Greater Miami enjoyed the second highest occupancy rate growth in the country during the week ending on the July 4th holiday. Data from Smith Travel Research reports that Miami had the second largest year-over-year growth in hotel occupancy in the nation. Miami's room occupancy was up 6.2% from the same week last year with 66.9% of Miami's rooms filled. Three major events which drew large numbers of visitors -- the 2009 USA Volleyball Girls Junior Olympics, VII Pan American Women's Volleyball Cup Championship, and the American Black Film Festival -- contributed to this occupancy boost. The report is good news for Miami at a time when the national hotel occupancy average fell 6% year-over-year to end the week at 57.7%.
