Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) provides state-of-the-art fire rescue services to the passengers, employees and visitors of Miami-Dade County airports. Miami International Airport (MIA) is one of the busiest airports in the United States. Among all airports in the country for 2006, MIA was ranked 1st in the amount of international freight handled, 3rd in the number of international passengers transported, and 4th in total cargo handled. MIA served over 32 million passengers in 2006.
MDFR responds to a broad range of airport emergencies including structural and aircraft fires, medical emergencies, fuel spills, hazardous materials spills, bio-chemical threats, radiological exposures, and other natural and man-made disasters.
Nine fire rescue units staffed by more than 100 Aircraft Rescue Firefighters, Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) provide expert services, responding 24 hours a day from two fire rescue stations located at MIA and one station located at Opa-Locka Executive Airport.
In order to maintain the highest level of readiness, MDFR's airport response units engage in continuous training programs and maintain dynamic disaster response plans for every potential hazard that may occur in the highly complex environment of Miami-Dade County's airports.
