    Fire & Medical Operations

MDFR is dedicated to providing the most efficient and professional response to the broadest range of emergency incidents by making every unit and its crew capable of initiating lifesaving action at any emergency. Our core service on every frontline emergency response vehicle includes immediate fire and medical response capabilities.

All fire suppression vehicles are equipped to respond to medical emergencies with firefighters who are also emergency medical responders, and all medical rescue transport vehicles carry specialized equipment that enables paramedic firefighter crewmembers to support suppression efforts or conduct search and rescue activities at any fire incident.

A rigorous in-service training program ensures that all firefighters maintain peak performance levels in both firefighting and medical rescue skills, regardless of unit assignment. MDFR officers in charge of any operational unit, whether a suppression or rescue unit, are capable of assuming command of any incident until it is resolved or until a higher ranking officer assumes command. Incident commanders at all fire incidents are trained to determine the need for a Fire Investigator, in cases where the cause of the fire is suspicious or unable to be confirmed.

MDFR fire rescue operations are divided into two regional response districts. The North District is comprised of the unincorporated areas of northern Miami-Dade County and 20 individual municipalities. This response territory spans from the beaches on the east coast to areas beyond the Urban Development Boundary (UDB) in the west, and from the Miami-Dade/Broward County Line to Miami International Airport in the south.

The South District is a rapidly growing region comprised mainly of the unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade County and 10 individual municipalities, spanning from Biscayne Bay on the east to areas beyond the UDB in the west, and from the City of Doral in the north to the Miami-Dade/Monroe County Line in the south. The South District also encompasses most of the county's rural and agricultural areas.
