Blaze in Pet Shop Kills Animals

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Early Wednesday morning, October 3, 2007, at 2:30 a.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) responded to a report of a fire in a pet shop located at NW 119 Street and 88 Avenue.

When units arrived, they noticed thick smoke emitting from under the doors. Fire crews  had to use circular saws to cut through the metal roll-up doors in order to make entry. As soon as the doors were breached, visible flames were seen throughout most of the structure’s interior. Firefighters advanced hose lines and extinguished the flames as they searched for the base of the fire. During their search, several dead animals were discovered. The animals consisted of at least 50 birds, mostly parakeets, two Shitzus and a rabbit.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to save eight dogs, five of which are puppies. Paramedics treated each of these canines with oxygen via MDFR’s pet oxygen masks.

Twenty-four firefighters had the fire under control within 20 minutes. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was attributed to an electrical problem within the building.
