Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) honored recipients of the Employee Valor and Excellence Awards at the annual Medal Day Ceremony at the Firefighters Memorial Building, located at 8000 NW 21 Street, in Doral.
More than 60 firefighters were recognized in six different categories, with the highest being the Silver Medal of Valor. This award is given to firefighters who have performed an act of outstanding bravery in the presence of extreme life-threatening and personal danger, above and beyond the ordinary call of duty and performed in the spirit of the Department's mission.
MDFR Firefighter Nicholas DiGiacomo was awarded the Silver Medal of Valor for his extraordinary rescue efforts during the Miami Beach Marina fire that occurred on March 31, 2008. Firefighter DiGiacomo rescued two people who were trapped inside a yacht that was fully engulfed in flames. DiGiacomo risked his own safety by relinquishing his air pack and mask to the trapped individuals who were on the brink of being overcome by toxic smoke and flames. Using a power saw, Firefighter DiGiacomo was able to cut an opening in the side of the yacht and freed the trapped occupants.
Family members, elected officials, local police and fire chiefs from the entire South Florida area were in attendance to witness this award ceremony. This event is modeled in the rich tradition of FDNY's award ceremonies.
