    Community Outreach

    Elderlinks
The Elderlinks program offers emergency intervention to MDFR patients in cases which might qualify as abuse, neglect or exploitation, and also serves as a referral system for patients and their families that might be in need. Through a collaborative effort between MDFR, local hospitals, and other government and community agencies, essential information pertaining to patient welfare is shared through the Elderlinks network, effectively extending the scope of assistance beyond incident response operations for the most vulnerable members of our community. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Junior Cadets
The Junior Cadet Program is a co-ed program targeting young adults between the ages of 14 and 18 who want to explore a possible career in the fire rescue service. Students must be 14 years of age and have graduated from the eighth grade. Cadets explore all aspects of the fire rescue profession through training, drills and ride-alongs, which allow the Cadets to ride on front-line operational fire rescue units as crew members. For more information about MDFR Junior Cadets, Click Here.

Miami-Dade County Academy of Fire Rescue (MDCAFR)
MDCAFR is a special interest public service academy that provides academic, career and technical education to high school students through a cooperative effort by Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR), Miami-Dade College (MDC) and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). This innovative program allows qualified students the opportunity to obtain professional fire and rescue certifications, and possible college credits for future careers in the fire rescue service. Public Access to Defibrillation Demonstration (PADD)
The American Heart Association estimates that the survival rate after cardiac arrest would increase by 20 percent, and 40,000 more lives could be saved each year with more consistent application of effective bystander CPR and early use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). PADD programs across the country are helping communities recognize the importance of having AEDs readily available in public places.

Miami-Dade Heartwatch is a community-based PADD initiative to improve survival rates following sudden cardiac arrest for residents and visitors in Miami-Dade County. To find out how you can bring PADD to your neighborhood or place of business, Click Here.

    Safe Haven for Newborns
All staffed Miami-Dade fire stations are designated Safe Havens for Newborns. Fire station personnel will accept newborns with no questions asked, and provide transportation to the nearest hospital for medical care and referral to a participating private adoption agency that will arrange for placement of the newborn with a waiting family. The Safe Haven for Newborns program allows mothers, fathers or others in possession of an unharmed newborn, approximately three days old or less, to leave them at designated Safe Havens with no questions asked, totally anonymous, and free from fear of prosecution.
