
Basic content includes, but is not limited to: patient assessment, airway management, cardiac arrest, external and internal bleeding, shock, traumatic injuries, fractures, dislocations, sprains, poisoning, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, acute abdomen, communicable diseases, patients with abnormal behavior, alcohol and drug abuse, the unconscious state, emergency childbirth, burns, environmental hazards, communications, reporting, extrication and transportation of patients.
The student must be proficient in patient assessment and evaluation, the use of suctioning devices, oral and nasal airways, resuscitation devices, oxygen equipment, sphygmomanometer and stethoscope, splints of all types, pneumatic anti-shock garments, extrication tools, dressings and bandages, stretchers and patient carrying devices.
This course prepares the student for national and/or state certification as a basic EMT. Additionally this program prepares students for entry level positions working on ambulances, rescue units, fire trucks and hospital emergency departments as an EMT-Basic.
Objectives:
- Comprehend and apply clinical information relevant to the role of the EMT.
- Demonstrate proficiency in all of the skills necessary for the entry level EMT.
- Demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectations for the EMT.
- To assist the entry level EMT in the recognition of the need for continuing education.
Dual Enrollment Guidelines
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate Admission Requirements:
- Minimum Unweighted GPA is 3.0
- Completion of admissions process for dual enrollment. (Process should begin during summer of the Junior year.)
- Successful completion of the college Computerized Placement Test (CPT).
- Meet minimum CPT exam score requirement;
- Reading 83
- English 83
- Algebra 72
- Completion of the application process.
- Successful completion of a First Responder course.
- Hold a current BLS (Basic Life Support) CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) card.
The M-DCPS Health Science Education program has a memorandum of agreement in articulation with MDC for the First Responder program completer toward an Associate in Science Degree in Emergency Medical Services. Upon First Responder program completion, students will receive MDC course credit for:
HSC 0001 – Introduction to Health Care (3 credits)
EMS 1059 – Responder in Emergency Care (1 credit)
EMS 1059L – Responder in Emergency Care lab (1 credit)
***EMS 1059 and 1059L are prerequisites for the MDC EMT Certificate program.
