Did you know that Miami is the home to the only living coral reef in the United States? And did you know that the Everglades is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side? Did you know that Biscayne Aquifer, our only source of drinking water, is only inches below our feet? And did you know that Miami-Dade County is often the target of environmental crimes like illegal dumping and chemical pollution, acts that threaten the people, the wildlife, and the natural resources of our County?

The Preserving the Environment Through Education (P.E.T.E.) Project is an elementary-level environmental education program which details the Miami-Dade Police Department’s vital role in the protection of our natural resources. This fun, interactive, and educational program explores local biology, ecology, and environmental conservation topics and demonstrates how the Department protects the public and our environment.
Since the program’s inaugural year in 2003, more than 100 schools and over 16,000 students have participated in this exciting program. During the 60-minute P.E.T.E. presentation, students get to discover all of the amazing natural environments in Miami-Dade County and get to experience a day in the life of a police Environmental Investigator.
