The Sexual Crimes Bureau (SCB) is an investigative Bureau within the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). It is staffed 24 hours, 7 days a week, to provide an immediate response to allegations of sexual crimes and to initiate an expeditious follow-up criminal investigation. SCB investigates those assaults defined in Florida Statutes 794 and classified in the crime information systems as Forcible Sex Offenses. The Forcible Sex Offense category is defined as any sexual act directed against another person forcibly and/or against that person’s will; or not forcibly or against the person’s will where the victim is incapable of giving consent. Offenses of Florida Statutes 800.04, Lewd or Lascivious Offenses committed upon or in the presence of persons less than 16 years of age are also investigated by SCB.
To ensure that the utmost effort is put forth to protect our residents from the high level of threat that sexual predators and offenders, particularly those who prey on children, the Sexual Predator and Offender Section (SPOS) was implemented by SCB in February of 2006. SPOS monitors the ever changing mandates required by local, state, and federal laws while maintaining over 3,938 files on all sexual predators and offenders who currently reside or formerly resided in Miami-Dade County (MDC). SPOS is aggressive in its efforts to notify the community and maintain consistent monitoring and tracking of sexual predators and offenders while taking enforcement actions when necessary to ensure compliance. To maintain better accountability, the Miami- Dade Police Department designated SCB as the only site in MDC where offenders and predators can register and re-register.
In addition, SCB is committed to assisting the victims of sexual crimes by facilitating services and serving as a liaison to community agencies and the criminal justice system. SCB investigates allegations of sexual crimes while also offering assistance and guidance to victims in accordance with the guidelines provided by the State of Florida’s Attorney General’s Office for the fair treatment of victims.
