Special Patrol Bureau Mission • Conducts routine sea and air patrol
• Performs search and rescue
• Conducts specialized traffic enforcement
• Investigates non-fatal hit and run crashes
• Conducts canine patrol and explosives searches
• Provides dignitary protection
• Manages and coordinates police services at special events
• Provides assistance during the service of high-risk warrants
• Resolves incidents involving barricaded subject and hostage situations
• Coordinates police response to civil unrest and demonstrations
In addition, the specific duties of the Bureau’s Units are described as:
Administrative Unit • To remain abreast of the budgetary needs of the Bureau.
• To facilitate an expeditious and orderly flow of administrative paperwork.
• To establish efficient, accurate procedures for equipment assignment and inventory maintenance and to ensure that all County-owned vehicles, radios, capital assets, and specialized equipment are available at all times.
• To expedite acquisition of necessary supplies and equipment from County and private sector sources to meet daily needs of the administrative and specialized units within the Bureau.
• To maintain current personnel information regarding assignment location, emergency contact information, and payroll status.
• To assist with daily office operations by ensuring that required office equipment is functional and requests for repairs are processed.
• Process requests for public records and career day events.

Bomb Squad

• Conducts research and development of breaching tools and tactics
• Conducts chemical agent research and development
• Provides specialized training to other agencies
• Participates in advisory role on the Mobile Field Force Committee

Canine Unit • Searches for subjects and evidence
• Narcotics detection
• Explosive searches and sweeps
• Search for lost persons
• Cadaver searches
• Assist patrol units on calls
• Saturation patrols in districts
Aviation Unit • Support of perimeter operations
• Investigative surveillances
• Vehicle and foot pursuits
• Reconnaissance for major events and demonstrations
• Assist other agencies
Marine Patrol
• Enforces maritime laws in the coastal and inland waterways of Miami-Dade County
• Inspects vessels
• Renders assistance to other agencies
• Conducts search and rescue operations
• Assists with alien and drug smuggling interdiction
• Enforces State environmental and marine fishing laws
Motorcycle Unit
• Enforces Florida State traffic statutes
• Conducts specialized enforcement ie.
• DUI checkpoints / saturation patrols
• School zones
• Participate in public information and education campaigns
• Investigate non-fatal hit and run crashes

• Breath Alcohol Testing Squad (B.A.T.S.)
Special Events Unit
• Plans and coordinates and manages police services to major events
• Coordinates the Special Events Response Team (SERT) to demonstrations, rallies, marches as directed
• Participates in the training of the SERT concept to department personnel
• Coordinates staffing of film jobs for Miami-Dade County Film Office
