Mayor Carlos Alvarez Launches Gun Bounty Program

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez will join Miami-Dade Police Director Robert Parker and Jack Sullivan of Miami-Dade Crimestoppers to launch the Gun Bounty Program, on Thursday, May 24, 2007, at 10:30am, at Miami-Dade Police Department Headquarters, 9105 NW 25 Street, in Doral.
The Gun Bounty Program makes it possible for residents to get a $1,000 reward for turning someone in with an illegal gun. The goal is to get weapons and criminals off the streets by reaching out to individuals who know someone with an illegal firearm.
Jail inmates, people in the criminal court system, inner city school students, and people who frequent pawn shops are among those in the target audience and a marketing campaign designed to reach these segments of the community will be unveiled at the upcoming media event. Municipal police departments, Miami-Dade Public Schools, and community groups are also participating in this countywide effort.
"While other communities around the country have implemented Gun Bounty Programs, no community is tackling the issue of gun violence quite like Miami-Dade County,", said Mayor Alvarez. "We are attempting to get guns off the streets by marketing to the very individuals who know exactly where illegal guns are.
