    The Medical Examiner Department has proudly served the citizens of Miami-Dade County for more than fifty years. Our office has a unique and highly specialized mission as we provide professional death investigation and toxicology services to the citizens of Miami-Dade County.

    Latest News!

    Public Interment Program Reductions – Recent personnel reductions will impact our service response times.  We appreciate your patience.  Please note the following:

    • Requests from hospitals or nursing homes for pick-up may require 1 to 2 days.
    • Inquiries from families regarding case status or scheduling an appointment to collect cremains may require 5 business days.
    • Requests from media for information on PIP-related matters may require 7 business days.
    • Requests from individuals seeking historical information on a family member may require up to 21 business days.

    Records Reductions – Recent personnel reductions have increased our response times.  Requests for public records will be fulfilled in the order in which they are received.  Requests may take 14 or more business days to complete.  Thank you for your patience.

    Governor Charlie Crist Appoints Miami-Dade County Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Bruce A. Hyma to The State’s Medical Examiners Commission.

    Florida Medical Examiner System
    The State of Florida adopted the medical examiner system in 1956.  Each judicial district within the state has its own medical examiner department.  The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Department corresponds with the 11th District.  You can learn more about the statewide system by visiting FDLE-Medical Examiners Commission website.

    Anyone wishing to know if a loved one was brought to the M.E. Department may check the Medical Examiner Database Search for the deceased.
