    Florida Medical Examiner System

The State of Florida adopted the medical examiner system in 1956.  Each judicial district within the state has its own medical examiner department.  The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Department corresponds with the 11th District.  You can learn more about the statewide system by visiting  FDLE-Medical Examiners Commission website.

Florida statutes place certain categories of death under medical examiner jurisdiction.  Generally medical examiners investigate all non-natural deaths within their districts as well as a small number of natural deaths as outlined in the statutes.  Florida Statute 406  and Administrative Code 11-G.
