Odontology

Dr. Richard Souviron is the Chief of the Forensic Odontology section of the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Department and Dr. William E. Silver is the Deputy Chief of Forensic Odontology.   This department has the responsibility of preserving the records of unidentified persons by taking photographs, X-rays and charting all teeth.  Impressions of the teeth are accomplished when necessary and pattern injuries of the skin are analyzed when bitemarks may be a consideration.  Capability  for re-creation of the face by clay overlay is also available.  All information for Unidentified Persons are recorded in NCIC for possible matching with MCIC Missing Persons information.  It is the responsibility of the forensic odontologist to provide the identification of a body  by comparison of the original antemortem records and the postmortem dental records whenever possible.

In instances where criminal investigation is indicated the Forensic Odontologist provides  professional support to the Law Enforcement Agency, the State Attorney's Office or the Public Defender - as necessary.

During the course of the year, the Forensic Odontology section conducts individual and group training in dental autopsy techniques and bite mark analysis.  The South Florida Dental Identification Response Team (D.I.R.T.) is a vital part of the odontology section and various members participate in the morgue activities when called.  This team is part of the South Florida District Dental Association and is chaired by Dr. William E. Silver and Dr. Raul Molina.
