    Public Interment Program

The purpose of the Public Interment Program (PIP) is to provide final disposition in accordance with the law for those persons who have no family or cannot afford private funeral arrangements.   In order to qualify for this program, the death must have occurred within Miami-Dade County (even though the decedent may not have been a County resident), and the decedent must be declared indigent or unclaimed.   A decedent is considered indigent if his/her financial status is unknown or if the next of kin is financially unable to arrange for final disposition.  A decedent is considered unclaimed if the next of kin cannot be located, or, if located, do not accept responsibility for the final disposition.

Because the Public Interment Program can meet only basic needs, the next of kin are always encouraged to seek alternative means of final disposition.  The Public Interment Coordinator can assist families with referrals for low cost funeral arrangements.

    PIP Pre-approvals

The regular business hours of the PIP are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  To assist caregivers (hospices, nursing homes, adult living facilities) with dispositions that may arise during non-business hours, pre-approvals can be made with our office.  See the Pre-approval forms available on the menu on this page.  The PIP supervisor, Elise Bobbitt, can be reached by calling 305-545-2422 or by e-mail at P41@miamidade.gov

    PIP Service Reductions

Recent personnel reductions will impact our service response times.  We appreciate your patience.  Please note the following:

    • Requests from hospitals or nursing homes for pick-up may require 1 to 2 days.
    • Inquiries from families regarding case status or scheduling an appointment to collect cremains may require 5 business days.
    • Requests from media for information on PIP-related matters may require 7 business days.
    • Requests from individuals seeking historical information on a family member may require up to 21 business days.

County cemeteries: Miami-Dade County maintains two cemeteries.  The Kendall cemetery is located at SW 79th Street and 115th Avenue.  The Galloway cemetery is located at SW 60th Street and 87th Avenue.
