Governor Charlie Crist has appointed Dr. Bruce A. Hyma, Chief Medical Examiner for Miami-Dade County, to the state’s Medical Examiners Commission.
Dr. Hyma brings a wealth of medical experience to the position. As a Commission member, he will oversee the appointment and re-appointment of other District Medical Examiners, assist in the publication of an annual workload report and provide disciplinary oversight of the state’s medical examiner activities. His appointment is for four years with a second term re-appointment option.
The Commission is a nine-member board that meets quarterly to oversee the work of the state’s 24 medical examiner districts. It provides guidance and assistance to Florida’s medical examiners on issues related to the statutory requirements (F.S. 406) and the administrative code (FAC 11G) as well as to ongoing legislative issues.
A Michigan native, Dr. Hyma received his Medical Doctorate from Wayne State University in Detroit before beginning a four-year residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester. He joined the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Department as a forensic pathology fellow in 1987, became an associate medical examiner in 1988 and was appointed Chief in January 2001 by then County Manager Steve Shiver. Dr. Hyma is married with three children. His wife Jan is a nurse consultant with a private law firm.
