Seminars: Bugs, Bones & Botany - Forensic Anthropology

    Dates:
    Monitor for future workshops.

    Tuition:   NA

This dynamic workshop is a unique, hands-on, experiential training opportunity in death scene identification and investigation.  Our cutting-edge program in archaeology and excavation is designed for experienced homicide and crime scene investigators from local and federal law enforcement, as well as military investigations.  In addition to classroom lecture by experts in a variety of forensic investigative disciplines, most sessions are focused on identifying and locating hidden graves, postmortem changes to skeletal or near-skeletal remains, and the actual ‘digs’ of several exhibits of remains at varying burial scene situations.  You will become thoroughly familiar with field methods in the location, recovery, and interpretation of human remains from outdoor contexts.  Topics and exercises include:

    • Understanding forensic archaeologic and anthropologic principles.
    • Effective and efficient search methodologies; understanding the role of the cadaver dog.
    • Aerial experience in mapping, photographing, operating remote sensing & ground penetrating radar and proton magnetometer.
    • Defining forensic site parameters; grid the scene.
    • Evaluating taphonomic changes.
    • Identification and collection of entomological & botanical specimens; other artifacts.
    • Excavation and recovery of remains; burial site and surface recovery.
    • Evidence preservation; analysis and storage.
