Public Interment Program

The purpose of the Public Interment Program (PIP) is to provide final disposition in accordance with the law for those persons who have no family or cannot afford private funeral arrangements.  In order to qualify for this program, the death must have occurred within Miami-Dade County (even though the decedent may not have been a county resident).  The PIP will be charging fees for its services:

PIP Fees
Fee Description Cost
Families providing proof of receiving current government assistance under one or more of the programs listed below will pay: Food Stamps, Medicaid and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Supplemental Security Income $ 105.00
Families unable to provide proof of receiving current government assistance will be charged a fee equivalent to the per-cremation cost incurred by Miami-Dade County. $ 383.00
PIP Storage Fee: Charge to families choosing to make private arrangements after a body has been transported and stored at the ME facility $ 315.00
PIP Shipping Fee Domestic $ 80.00
Public Interment Program – Indigent Cremation Program –Administrative Fee $ 52.00

Because the PIP can meet only basic needs and may require eight or more weeks to completely process a case, the next of kin are always encouraged to seek alternative means of final disposition. You may open the file below to see a listing of local funeral homes and direct disposers that will offer other low-cost options.

PIP Pre-approvals

Regular business hours for the PIP are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  To assist caregivers (hospices, nursing homes, adult living facilities) with dispositions that may arise during non-business hours, pre-approvals can be made with our office.  See the Pre-approval form available on the menu on this page and the fee for this service below.  The PIP Coordinator, Sandra Witty-Fortunato, can be reached by calling 305-545-2422 or by e-mail at sandraw@miamidade.gov.

PIP Service Reductions

Recent personnel reductions will impact our service response times.  We appreciate your patience.  Please note the following:

  • Requests from hospitals or nursing homes for pick-up may require 1 to 2 days.
  • Inquiries from families regarding case status or scheduling an appointment to collect cremains may require 5 business days.
  • Requests from media for information on PIP-related matters may require 7 business days.
  • Requests from individuals seeking historical information on a family member may require up to 21 business days.
