VIP Collaborates with MDPR to help end bullying in Miami-Dade County

The Miami-Dade Violence Intervention Program (VIP) collaborated with Miami-Dade Parks Summer Camp Programs, Parks Enforcement Division and Miami-Dade Corrections to make over sixty (60) anti-bullying presentations at summer camps this year. In all, over 2400 youth attended these presentations led by Ms. Carol Murray-Brown, VIP Coordinator, and other JSD staff. Presenters addressed the issue of bullying from three different angles: the bully, the victim, and the bystander. According to Carol, ’these workshops not only provided youth with insight on the effects of bullying on themselves and others, but it helped build their self-esteem-many of them felt validated.’

After one of the presentations, a 12 year old girl approached the presenters stating that she was often bullied at school for her appearance-the anti-bullying presentation helped her learn strategies to deal with this type of abuse from her peers. The presenters also reminded her of her inner and outer beauty and the ‘personal power’ she has to ‘rise above’.  In the end, the young girl walked away with a stronger sense of self and some useful tools that will help her deal with bullying in the future.

Miami-Dade Parks Enforcement Division Officer Jolanda Chrestfield addressed youth safety in the community. The issue of ‘stranger danger’ was a focus of the presentation. Miami-Dade Corrections Sergeant Sandra Edwards and fellow officers advised the youth that when bullying is not addressed at a young age it follows through to the adult years; there are many instances of bullying the jails.

This collaborative anti-bullying effort was a success, and plans are underway for a year round partnership with JSD and MDPR focusing on prevention programming for at risk youth.
