Transit Village takes root in Liberty City

On February 16, Commissioner Edmonson joined City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Dr. Enid Pinkney, chair of the Lemon City Cemetery Corp, in celebrating the historic designation of the Lemon City Cemetery. The cemetery, located at 285 NW 71 Street, is the resting place of some of Miami's early black settlers. Read more...

In commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, Commissioner Edmonson participated in the “Reclaim the Dream” candlelight vigil and march near Martin Luther King Boulevard (NW 62 Street) and NW 7th Avenue. The event was held on the anniversary of Dr. King’s death.

The property features 80 units reserved for seniors who are living on a fixed income and are in most need of affordable housing. Thanksgiving

She also distributed more than 1,000 meals at Olinda Park at her inaugural Thanksgiving Festival, which included fun activities and performances by local choirs.

District 3 children received some early Christmas gifts from Commissioner Edmonson. The commissioner and Santa Claus distributed 800 toys to young children at the Joseph Caleb Center, with gifts including board games, dolls, race cars, and more for all ages.

Each New Year’s Eve and Independence Day, Commissioner Edmonson holds a press conference in her district asking residents to cease celebratory gunfire. Joined by law enforcement officials from both the County and cities, Commissioner stresses the danger of stray bullets which kill unsuspecting bystanders.

Commissioner Edmonson showed resident soccer players her own athletic skills.
Commissioner Edmonson showed resident soccer players her own athletic skills at the grand opening of the Little Haiti Multi-Cultural Soccer Tournament at the Little Haiti “Manno Sanon” Park. A 10-week tournament followed, featuring 32 games with teams representing various countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
3rd Annual Back to School Fun Day
Commissioner Edmonson distributing 2,354 free book bags at Olinda Park The threat of rain did not stop Commissioner Edmonson from distributing 2,354 free book bags at Olinda Park  to children preparing for school as part of her annual Back to School Fun Day, which also featured fun children’s activities such as bounce houses, music, and other entertainment.

  • Sponsored legislation urging the Florida Legislature to restore funding for refugee services provided by the County following the January 12, 2010 Haiti earthquake.
     
  • Sponsored legislation urging President Obama's administration to waive the fees associated with filing for Temporary Protected Status by Haitian nationals seeking refuge in the U.S. following the recent earthquake.
     
  • Sponsored resolution urging the Florida Legislature to enact legislation providing that the state reimburse the fees, costs and other expenses, including legal fees, associated with an individual's pursuit of compensation under the 'Victims of Wrongful Incarceration Act.'
     
  • Sponsored a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to enact legislation requiring that antifreeze or engine coolant sold in the State of Florida contain a taste aversive agent to prevent accidental ingestion.
     
  • Sponsored creating the Miami Children's Initiative which will provide a network of support for at-risk children and families in the zone through support systems ranging in prenatal care and education to financial literacy and homeownership.
     
  • Co-sponsored legislation to prevent wage theft in Miami-Dade County.
     
  • Sponsored legislation banning the use of chains and shackles on detained children. This legislation was adopted by the Florida Supreme Court in December 2009.

  • Commissioner Edmonson currently chairs the Housing and Community Development Committee, and is a member of the Budget, Planning and Sustainability, Government Operations, and Transit Committees. Commissioner Edmonson also serves as a representative of the Miami-Dade County's Homeless Assistance Trust and Chair of the Value Adjustment Board.
