More than 700 members of the building professions and trades attended Miami-Dade County's 2nd Industry Forum for architecture, engineering and construction professionals. At the event, Mayor Carlos Alvarez announced that the County's Economic Stimulus Program (ESP) has expedited nearly $500 million in contracts for Miami-Dade projects at the airport, seaport and other areas of County government.
"While local government cannot provide all the solutions, there are things we can do to help cushion the effects of current economic conditions including getting work out on the street as quickly as possible," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez. "It is the right time for local government to ramp up its capital programs; and we are fortunate in that there is a great deal on the drawing board."
The event, which was held at the Port of Miami, featured presentations by County Manager George Burgess and the directors of the County's major capital departments including the Seaport, Aviation, General Services Administration, Water and Sewer, Park and Recreation, Public Works and the Office of Capital Improvements. These senior County officials discussed ways to improve the contracting process, as well as upcoming opportunities such as the Marlins Stadium and federally funded economic stimulus projects.
The Industry Forum encourages dialogue between Miami-Dade contract managers and architecture, engineering and construction professionals. Last year's event helped accelerate the contracting, including creation of the ESP that shaves off four to six months off the process. This year, the County is continuing the dialogue and making the process more customer-friendly.
