The twenty-hour course in broken up over three days of training, day one is eight hours starting at 8:30 a.m., day two is four hours starting at 8:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. and the final day of training starts at 8:30 a.m. and is again eight hours. Classes are available mid-week and weekends to accommodate the team members. The class dates need not be consecutive; however, mid-week classes have a two-week completion time and weekend classes, one month.
There is a minimum of sixteen (16) students required to conduct the CERT course. Any one team or combination of teams, in which the minimum number of sixteen (16) confirmed students is met, are given the option of holding the first two days of training at a location they provide. Teams that are providing the location are required to make arrangements with the CERT Coordinator to pick-up and return the requisite class materials. Classes for teams unable to provide a location will take place at the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Headquarters.
Not meeting the minimum number of students does not preclude participation of smaller teams or of Individuals with no team affiliation. In these cases students will be placed into existing classes as class size allows or placed on a waiting list. Once the waiting list reaches sixteen a class will be scheduled. There is a maximum number of thirty (30) students for any one class and all students are required to attend the dates and times for which the team is scheduled.
The final class takes place at a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue specialized training facility, with directions and the address provided during class. A signed and notarized hold-harmless agreement is required from each student, along with a completed registration, by the first day of class. Both forms are located on-line just scroll down and download them.
Teams should have one individual register all members. This team facilitator may call the CERT coordinator at 305 468-5406 once they have their members confirmed and are ready to schedule classes. Individuals should email the CERT Coordinator at cert@miamidade.gov and provide name, daytime phone contact, an email address, and mid-week or weekend preference.
It is important to note that the DEM&HS reserves the right to cancel any class at any time, with little or no notice. This should occur only in the event of a disaster impending or impacting the County; however, other incidents could precipitate the cancellation of classes. The DEM&HS will contact the team facilitator and/or individuals not affiliated with the team and advise them of the cancellation. It is the responsibility of the team facilitator to contact the rest of their team. Classes will be rescheduled at the earliest possible date.
