The Community Action Agency facilitates a program to provide hurricane shutters to the elderly and people with disabilities who meet program requirements. Many of these individuals are unable to install these shutters on their own and therefore require assistance. When a storm is approaching, teams of DAEs will put up the hurricane panels on these clients' homes. After a storm, DAEs will remove the hurricane panels if no other storms are imminent. The panels are lightweight aluminum, range in length from three to nine feet and are affixed to the home on tracks by wing-nuts. Installation will require working outside, lifting and affixing the panels. It is light labor that does not require any knowledge of tools. It may require some climbing to reach the top panels of the shutters.
If possible, when the team visits the home to install the shutters they should see if the resident has enough food and water for 72 hours. If a resident is in need of food or water or any other aid, DAEs should call the DAE Hotline so that this information can be routed through the appropriate channels for assistance.
