Miami-Dade County is committed to reducing energy consumption at its facilities, maximizing energy efficiency and evaluating the use of renewable and alternative energy technologies for government operations. We are also encouraging the community and offering incentives to do the same.
Our integrated Energy Efficiency Conservation Strategy combines projects that will:
- Improve our ability to manage and reduce energy use across our government operations
- Enable, demonstrate and evaluate the performance of energy-efficiency/renewable energy retrofits of facilities and other energy-consuming government assets
- Provide targeted communitywide financial assistance and industry-based financial incentives for energy efficiency and renewable energy
- Target behavior change community-wide for energy conservation
Miami-Dade nets $12.5 million from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program
Federal grant dollars provided to Miami-Dade County will go toward energy management and construction projects, citizen outreach and education, pilot programs and more. Funds from the grant will also help create local green jobs.
Properly dispose efficient light bulbs: It's a bright idea
Compact fluorescent light bulbs are great at conserving energy, but they contain traces of mercury. When they're ready to be disposed, do the safe thing. Miami-Dade County's Home Chemical Collection centers accept these light bulbs, as do participating locations.
Local and federal energy incentives
Information about available energy incentives -- at the local and federal levels -- can go a long way toward building a green community while saving through tax credits, rebate programs and subsidies. Learn about more energy and cost-saving programs at the Florida Energy & Climate Commission website.
How to work with the County on stimulus and grant funds
Companies, contractors or consultants interested in working with the County in association with federal stimulus and Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants (EECBG), please make sure you are registered as a vendor with the County.
More information and registration details can be found with the Department of Procurement Management.
Please also make sure to visit the County's new American Recovery and Re-investment Act site and check it for weekly updates.
You can find more information about these federal opportunities on the County's Grants site.
Energy assistance for low-income families
Energy conservation programs are available for low-income homeowners that will help reduce energy bills and make homes more energy efficient.
Addition of solar-powered beacons
The Public Works Department will be procuring solar powered flashing signals at pedestrian crosswalks. The new signals utilize high-efficiency Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology and are controlled through a radio transmitter, thereby eliminating the need to install costly cables underground.
Good energy
The County recently renewed its Energy Service Company (ESCO) contracts as part of GSA’s Energy Conservation Performance Program. In the 10 years since it commenced in June 1998, the County has initiated approximately $50 million in energy conservation improvements in County facilities. These improvements have already or will, upon completion, result in a reduction in consumption of approximately 73 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 71 million gallons of water.
