Property Appriaser Will Continue Accepting New Long Term Senior Exemption Applications

Property Appraiser Carlos Lopez-Cantera will continue accepting new long term senior exemption applications until Monday, June 3rd, despite the March 1st deadline, pursuant to Florida Statute, Section 196.011(8).

Amendment 11, which was approved by Florida’s voters during the November 2012 General Election, provides an additional property tax exemption to low income seniors who are long term residents of their home. The amendment has been implemented by Miami-Dade County and several municipalities. Property Appraiser Lopez-Cantera will be accepting applications for the exemption granted by Amendment 11 through June 3rd.

Lopez-Cantera stated, “We want to be sure everyone who qualifies for this new exemption is given ample opportunity to apply. State law, gives me the ability to continue accepting applications under certain circumstances, and I’m more than happy to do so, especially knowing it is going to help many Miami-Dade residents who are most in need.”

To qualify for the exemption, homeowners must meet the following requirements:

In addition, residents who may qualify for other property tax exemptions may still apply, if extenuating circumstances prevented them from filing prior to the March 1st deadline.

For assistance with exemption applications, residents may call the Property Appraiser’s Office at 305-375-4091 or file an exemption application in person at:
