Miami-Dade County’s potential to serve as an international gateway to domestic markets in the agriculture industry is the goal of Commissioner Senator Javier Souto, who has partnered with the Miami-Dade Park & Recreation Department to produce the first-ever Miami International Agriculture & Cattle Show (MIACS), May 16-18 at the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center at Tropical Park.
The three-day event is designed to showcase Florida’s agricultural influence and production, the industry’s economic impact on the state and South Florida region, and import/export opportunities available via Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami. Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Charles Bronson will join Commissioner Souto and others during a press conference to launch the MIACS on May 16 (additional details concerning the press conference will be announced at a later date).
The MIACS will feature a series of industry-trade seminars and workshops, presented by representatives from the following organizations:
- USDA Foreign Agricultural Service
- Miami International Airport
- The Port of Miami
- University of Florida’s Institute of Food & Agricultural Sciences (IFAS)
- ABS Global, Inc. – ABS Global is the world-leading provider of bovine genetics, reproduction services, technologies and udder-care products.
Topics for the seminars, some of which will be for the public and others for agriculture professionals, will include:
- Creating Economic Opportunity for U.S. Agriculture by Expanding Global Markets
- Perishables Handling and Logistics at Miami-Dade County’s Ports;
- The US National Animal ID Plan and Country of Origin Labeling (COOL);
- USDA Phytosanitary Requirements, Transit Permits, Entomologists Inspections and Plant Inspections;
- Forage systems for tropical and subtropical regions;
- Technical aspects of the agriculture business and marketplace
More than 200 head of beef cattle will be exhibited at the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center at Tropical Park, as breeders from across the state compete for awards and prizes.
In addition to addressing trade-professional interests, the Miami International Agriculture & Cattle Show will host a variety of entertainment and educational activities to attract the general public. The goal is to expose and educate the County community regarding the state’s agricultural history and the benefits and opportunities associated with its agricultural endeavors. Scheduled activities include international music performers, dog skills shows, horse shows, Kids Fun Zone, food and beverages, and much more. On Friday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., students from elementary and middle schools will have an educational tour of the show with demonstrations and exhibits.
Admission to MIACS is free. Cattle and entertainment will be featured at the Ronald Reagan Tropical Park Equestrian Center, located at 7900 SW 40th Street. All industry-related seminars will be held at the Tower Building at the Tamiami Park Youth Fairgrounds, 10901 Coral Way (SW 24th Street) in Miami.
