Miami-Dade Parks plans boating safety awareness day at black point marina over the labor day weekend in honor of one of its own

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Miami-Dade Parks is hosting a boating safety awareness day on Sunday, August 31, 2008, from 6 a.m. to noon at Black Point Marina, 24775 SW 87 Avenue in Cutler Bay featuring
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Marine Operations and their new Fireboat 1, Miami-Dade Police Marine Operations, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee (FWC).

The event was planned in memoriam of one of Miami-Dade Parks' own - Osmany "Ozzie" Castellanos, a former Miami-Dade Parks lifeguard, who at age 23 died last year in a boating accident during the summer.  The purpose of the event is to remind boaters of the importance of safety out at sea and the different maritime rules and regulations.  Miami-Dade Parks' employees have volunteered their personal time to remember their friend and colleague by talking to boaters and distributing safety information featuring photos of their friend.  The family of Castellanos, including his father who is a Miami-Dade Parks' employee, will also be in attendance.

Patrons of the marina will have the opportunity to view Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's new Fireboat 1 up close and learn about its features.  The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer free boat safety inspections upon request.   The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee will also be available to answer any questions about maritime rules and regulations.

"Labor Day weekend is a very busy weekend for recreational boaters who want to enjoy what little time remains of the summer," said Frank Faragalli, Assistant Director of Operations for Miami-Dade Parks.  "We hope that by targeting boaters and their passengers before they launch, they'll be reminded that everyone on a boat is expected to behave responsibly.
