(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Miami-Dade Parks and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman, District Four, will celebrate National Marina Day at Bill Bird Marina at Haulover Park with a full-day event which will also include the dedication of the new, 7,300 square-feet Dockmaster building on Saturday, June 12, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Bill Bird Marina at Haulover Park is located at 10800 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach.

Bill Bird Marina at Haulover Park is the recipient of this year's National Marina Day (NMD), Marina of the Year award by the Association of Marina Industries, and the official site of the national kick-off event for National Marina Day 2010. The award was announced in January and presented to a representative during an award ceremony at the International Marina and Boatyard Conference in Tampa, FL. Besides receiving a plaque and recognition for their efforts, Bill Bird Marina was announced as the site of the national kick-off event for National Marina Day 2010.  National Marina Day is managed by the Association of Marina Industries (AMI).

The all-day festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with the dedication of the new dockmaster building.  The dockmaster building was built in the Miami Moderne (MiMo) architectural design style and features design elements found on ships, such as windows resembling a ship's porthole, a front façade fixture resembling a lighthouse, and other features, all painted in a blue pastel color.  The building is two stories tall with an elevator.  The first floor has a laundry room, restrooms, showers, vending machine/snack room, and a multi-purpose room which will be available for meetings and marine-related classes.  The second floor has four park manager offices, one office for the dock master with a balcony overlooking the entire marina, a storage room, and a lobby area.

The total project cost for the dockmaster building was $3.5 million, funded by the Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond Program (BBC-GOB), the Marina MOU Capital Improvements, a Sunshine Loan, and a Florida Boating Improvement Program Grant.

Following the dedication ceremony, the public will enjoy numerous activities taking place throughout the marina and park, including Charter Boat fishing demonstrations, youth fishing trips, Chinese Dragon Boats and dancers, power boat races, a Kite Festival organized by Skyward Kites, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Fire Boat, Miami-Dade Parks EcoAdventures™, musical entertainment, Kid's Zone, food and nautical vendors, and much more.

In addition, Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation and Discover Boating will be offering free seminars throughout the day to include:  Introduction to Boat Handling, Emergency Devices and Flares, and Preparing your Boat for a Hurricane.  Space is limited so patrons are urged to call ahead of time to reserve their spot in the seminar.

The National Marina Day (NMD) was moved to June 12 which is also National Get Outdoors Day, to kick-off the start of the summer and of the boating season. On National Marina Day, marinas across the U.S. are asked to celebrate and promote their industry with a special event with civic leaders, politicians and the public, to educate the public and raise awareness of boating and boating safety, marinas as gateways to boating and the open seas, and marina personnel as stewards of the environment.

Admission to the event is free but there is a $6 parking fee to enter Haulover Park.  For more information, please call 305-947-3525.
