The Deering Estate at Cutler Presents the Theatre Lab in Partnership with the Theatre League of South Florida

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
The Theatre Lab at the Deering Estate at Cutler is a performance art series and residency opportunity developed in partnership with the South Florida Theatre League. The South Florida Theatre League is an alliance of theatrical organizations and professionals dedicated to nurturing, promoting, and advocating for the growth and prestige of the South Florida theatre industry.

Theater performances, workshops and lectures will be offered at the Deering Estate at Cutler. These diverse theatrical opportunities will attract new audiences to this art form, provide rare professional development opportunities for actors and writers, and test innovative approaches to theory and practice.

Theatre Lab Workshops will be held on Sunday, November 20, 2011; Sunday, January 15, 2012; Sunday, February 26, 2012 (part of the SoBay Festival of the Arts); Sunday, March 18, 2012; and Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm in the Visitor Center Exhibit Hall at the Deering Estate at Cutler. Please check Deering Estate for pricing information.

November 20, 2011: "Developing Compelling Characters"
Led by Andie Arthur, South Florida Theatre League
Using variations on sense memory, free writing, movement and improv - this workshop is designed to help playwrights get out of their own heads to create fully dimensional characters. While the workshop is designed for playwrights, the techniques used can be applied to acting and fiction writing. Please bring a notebook, a pen or pencil, and if you want to develop a specific character, a picture of what you think that character looks like.

January 15, 2012: "Viewpoints"
Led by Michael Yawney, South Florida Theatre League.
Sometimes actors know everything, except how to act. They understand the character and story, but find themselves stuck in graceless, pointless, and dull stage movement. They need help channeling their instincts so that their insight and vitality can become visible to other actors (and the audience). Through physical improvisation the "Viewpoints" train the actor to act with their whole body creating eloquent visual images.

March 18, 2012: TBD

May 20, 2012: "Eliza Doolittle Dialect"
Led by Andie Arthur, South Florida Theatre League
In honor of Eliza Doolittle Day, this workshop will focus on dialects, including standard British and cockney. Learn a new accent or two and improve the dialects in your repertoire.

Join us on February 26, 2012 as part of the SoBay Festival of the Arts for the "South Florida One-Minute Play Festival" curated by Dominic D'Andrea.  The "South Florida One-Minute Play Festival" will feature local playwrights and actors in short-form performances, each less than sixty-seconds, by some of the most exciting emerging and established writers in American Theatre. The One-Minute Play Festival (OMPF) is an NYC-based theatre company, founded by director/dramaturg Dominic D'Andrea, working in partnership with institutional theatres and collectives across the country who share playwright or community-specific missions. OMPF creates local playwright-focused community events, using a specific playmaking process, with the goal of promoting the spirit of radical inclusion by representing the culture of playwrights of different age, gender, race culture, and points of career. OMPF attempts to reflect the theatrical landscape of local artistic communities by creating a dialogue between the collective conscious and the individual voice.
