(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade Parks along with Miami-Dade County District 10 Commissioner Sen. Javier D. Souto, AARP, Service For Peace, Miami-Dade College's Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy, and Shell Lumber are spearheading a local volunteer project for September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, on Saturday, September 8, from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., at Tropical Park, 7900 SW 40 Street in Miami.
Volunteers from various organizations and schools will commemorate the victims and heroes of 9/11 through volunteer activities to include landscaping, refurbishing the horse stalls at the Equestrian Center, cleaning, building, and various other projects throughout Tropical Park. Thanks to generous donations from AARP, Shell Lumber and Miami-Dade Commissioner Javier D. Souto, volunteers will have the materials needed to complete project improvements.
Volunteers will gather at the football stadium to begin sign in at 8:30 a.m. The day will kick off with speeches delivered to recognize the importance of remembering the fallen through community service. And a special patriotic tribute will be presented by Boy Scout Troop 712.
"During these tough economic times, partnerships such as these help us to better serve the community," said Allison Diego, Director of Business Development, Fundraising and Advocacy for Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department. "This is a perfect example of what can be accomplished through local service projects such as the one at Tropical, sponsored by organizations that are committed to their community and willing to work with our park system," she added.
To register for this service project, volunteers must go to the parks website. Registration is required. For more information on this or other opportunities, or businesses and organizations interested in sponsoring a volunteer service project, please call Angie Gomez, Volunteer Coordinator for Miami-Dade Parks at 305-961-2781.
