Registration Underway For Miami-Dade County Parks Winter Break Camps

Kids will stay fit & thrilled with adventure-filled activities in the great outdoors!


(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- 
Even in these tough economic times, you can still help your child make the most out of the Winter School Recess and not break the bank, with affordable, fun and adventure-filled activities being offered at Miami- Dade County Parks'Winter Break Camps. Registration starts Monday, November 26, 2012. Camps will be held December 24, 2012 through January 4, 2013 (closed Christmas/New Year's Day), Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with early drop-off available at 7:30 a.m. and late pick-up until 6:00 p.m.

General Camp programs will thrill and challenge youngsters with a variety of activities from fitness, sports, and arts and crafts to games and exciting field trips. There are also Specialized Camps, which focus on a specific interest or need, including camps for nature and wildlife-lovers like Zoo Miami's “Winter Break Daze” Camp and EcoAdventures™ Camps and; the Country Club of Miami's Junior Golf Camp; and camp programs for youth with disabilities.

“Winter Break Daze” at Zoo Miami is designed to immerse children ages 4 - 8 into the world of wildlife and conservation. It's a fun-filled learning adventure that includes live animal presentations, visits to animal exhibits, interactions with zookeepers, wildlife enrichment activities, and much more!

EcoAdventures™ Camps at AD Barnes Park, Arch Creek Park, and Tropical Park provide unique opportunities for children, ages 6 - 15, to explore the wonders of our South Florida ecosystem with outdoor activities from trail hikes and wildlife encounters, to canoeing and fishing excursions, participants will not only learn about their environment and connect with nature, but will get plenty of exercise. Participants will come to learn the wonderful nature surrounding the Deering Estate at Cutler as part of the EcoAdventures™ Winter Camp “Native vs Non-Native Species.” Children, ages 6 - 15, will explore the Estate's natural areas and learn about South Florida's flora and fauna and which species are invading our natural environment and how we can join different citizen science programs to protect our native species. The action-packed adventure includes wildlife encounters, biking, and more!

Junior Golf Camp at the Country Club of Miami offers children ages 7 - 16 the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of golf. The class is taught by resident instructor Larry Levow, who has been featured on the Golf Channel and has taught golfers of all levels, even some of the world's top PGA Tour players. Topics to be covered will include putting, short games, full swing, bunkers, rules, and etiquette.

Parents may register their child by visiting the specific Miami-Dade County Park where they wish their child to attend. Some parks offer online registration at Miami-Dade Parks, where the entire list of camp sites is also found. The public may also dial 311 for the Miami-Dade County Information Hotline. Prices for camps vary.

“Winter Break Daze” at Zoo Miami (Ages 4 - 8)
Zoo Miami, 12400 SW 152 St., Miami. Two sessions: Dec. 26 - 28 and Jan. 2 - 4. Enrollment is on a daily or three-day basis. The cost is $42/day or $114/three-days for non-members; and $38/day or $102/three-days for Zoological Society of Florida (ZSF) members. Extended care is available at an additional charge. About the Deering Estate at Cutler
The Deering Estate at Cutler is a 444-acre natural and archeological preserve and historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a center for education, culture and recreation. Junior Golf Camp (Ages 7-16)
Country Club of Miami, 6801 NW 168 St., Miami, 305-829-8456, Ext. 249. Two sessions: Session 1, December 26 - 28; Session 2, January 2 - 4. Full-day sessions are 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., and half-day sessions are 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The cost is $195/three full-day sessions and $105/three half-day sessions. Daily rate is $45/half-day session and $85/full-day session. Fees include instruction, practice balls and short course play. Students must provide their own lunch.
