Registration for Miami-Dade County Parks ''Fit2play'' Spring Break Camps Starts March 1

Affordable camps offer fitness, sports, nature-encounters, field trips, and more!


Keep your kids active, fit and engaged during the spring school break with one of these affordable and memory-making “Fit2Play” Spring Break Camps being offered by the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. Registration starts Friday, March 1, 2013. Camps will be held March 25-29, 2013, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with early drop-off available at 7:30 a.m. and late pick-up until 6:00 p.m.

General Camp programs will thrill and challenge youngsters with a variety of activities from fitness, sports, and arts and crafts to games and exciting field trips. There are also Specialized Camps, which focus on a specific interest or need, including camps for nature and wildlife-lovers like Zoo Miami ''Zoofari Spring Camp'' and Eco AdventuresTM Camps; the Country Club of Miami's Junior Golf and camp programs for youth with disabilities.

Zoofari Spring Camp
At Zoo Miami is designed to immerse children ages 4 - 10 into the world of wildlife and conservation. It's a fun-filled learning adventure that includes live animal presentations, visits to animal exhibits, interactions with zookeepers, wildlife enrichment activities, and much more!

Eco AdventuresTM Camps
At AD Barnes Park, Arch Creek Park, and Tropical Park provide unique opportunities for children, ages 6 - 15, to explore the wonders of our South Florida ecosystem with outdoor activities from trail hikes and wildlife encounters, to canoeing and fishing excursions, participants will not only learn about their environment and connect with nature, but will get plenty of exercise.

Cycle of Life Spring Break Camp
Participants will come to learn about nature and participate in science discovery programs at the ''Cycle of Life Spring Break Camp'' at the Deering Estate as part of Eco-Adventure Camps. Children, ages 6 - 15, will learn and explore the cycle of life of many plants, animals and how all of us are part of a big cycle of life called the Earth. The Adventure will be filled with hikes, catching critters in the bay, explorations around the Estate and many hands-on activities.

Junior Golf Camp
At the Country Club of Miami offers children ages 7 - 16 the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of golf. The class is taught by resident instructor Larry Levow, who has been featured on the Golf Channel and has taught golfers of all levels, even some of the world's top PGA Tour players. Topics to be covered will include putting, short games, full swing, bunkers, rules, and etiquette.

Parents may register their child by visiting the specific Miami-Dade County Park where they wish their child to attend. Some parks offer online registration at Miami-Dade Parks, where the entire list of camp sites is also found. The public may also dial 311 for the Miami-Dade County Information Hotline. Prices for camps vary. Children with disabilities are welcome in all Park programs. Contact the park manager to develop an inclusion plan as early as possible.

The cost for these camps is $40 - $90/week, depending on the program. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.

Zoofari Spring Camp at Zoo Miami (Ages 4 - 10)

The Deering Estate at Cutler is a 444-acre natural and archeological preserve and historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a center for education, culture and recreation. Junior Golf Camp (Ages 7 - 16)
Country Club of Miami, 6801 NW 168 St., Miami, (305) 829-8456, Ext. 249. March 25-29. Full-day sessions are 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., and half-day sessions are 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The cost is $195/three full-day sessions and $105/three half-day sessions. Daily rate is $45/half-day session and $85/full-day session. Fees include instruction, practice balls and short course play. Students must provide their own lunch.
