CIAB announces winners of 10th Annual 'Clean-Up & Green Up' Poster and Video Contest

Local student artists recognized for helping to raise Miami-Dade’s environmental consciousness


(MIAMI, May 6, 2014) — Praising the next generation for its support of cleaning and greening Miami-Dade County, the Community Image Advisory Board (CIAB) and the Board of County Commissioners today recognized 10 local student artists for their creative contributions in the 10th Annual ‘Clean Up and Green Up’ poster and video contest. The winners were selected from more than 1,500 poster and 15 video submissions.   

“Their artwork demonstrates the value of creating welcoming environments,” said Miami-Dade County District 9 Commissioner and CIAB Chairman Dennis C. Moss. “It reminds us all of why it is so important to keep our community full of trees and litter free.” 

The winners in the “poster category” include: 

Elementary School

1st Place Winner: Valentina Caro, Cushman School.  Teacher: Ms. Martinez

2nd Place:  Rashel Serrano, Doral Academy. Teacher: Ms. Melero

Middle School                                     

1st Place Winner: Thalia Matos, South Miami Middle School. Teacher: Ms. Goodman

     “Flownometal”

     An original rap video by iPreparatory Academy students: Teiheim Edwards (producer), Adriana Salazar, Alexander Avedano, Alicia Mota, Amanad Antoku, Astrid Avila, Beth Leon, Carlos Chacin, Chris Ivy, Jonathan Lemus, Lillibeth Lozano, Lisette Garcia, Serena White-Reyes, Shaun Fedrick, and Victoria De La Torre.

The CIAB also recognized its sponsors who have been supporting the Clean-Up & Green Up Contest since its inception: 

Immediately following the Board of County Commissioner’s presentation of the 10th Annual CIAB ‘Clean Up and Green Up’ awards, students joined parents and teachers for a reception. 

The award recipients will also be recognized at tomorrow’s Miami-Dade School Board meeting. 

About the CIAB:

Housed in the Parks Recreation and Open Spaces Department, the CIAB is a multi-jurisdictional collaborative dedicated to creating beautiful gateways, corridors and connections through cleaning and greening investments. Working with members, including the Florida Department of Transportation, PortMiami, the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and Miami-Dade Public Works and Waste Management departments, the CIAB’s impact can be seen in efforts, such as: litter reduction, tree plantings, roadway landscaping and Metrorail station improvements.  The CIAB launched Million Trees Miami in 2010.
