Free Exhibit Evening at the Deering Estate at Cutler Season Culmination Exhibit: Alumni and Project Residency Artists

(MIAMI, August 27, 2014) —  The Deering Estate at Cutler welcomes Alumni Artists in Residence, Vickie Pierre from 2009-2010, Yomarie Silva-O’Neal from 2010-2011, and Project Residency Artist Michael Gellatly from 2013-2014, for a Season Culmination Exhibit featuring experimental, mixed media, and site-specific work. The exhibit runs August 8 - September 26, 2014. The Exhibit Evening is on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

Exhibit Evenings: The Deering Estate at Cutler offers complimentary exhibit viewing nights, highlighting a variety of contemporary, historic, and visiting exhibitions inside the historic homes. Exhibit Evenings are free of charge and offer the public a chance to interact with artists and curators and to experience a variety of exhibit tours and talks. Exhibit Evenings are held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the third Wednesdays per annual schedule.

Vickie Pierre (Alumni Artist in Residence 2009-2010)

Vickie Pierre’s assemblages incorporate mass produced, gender-specific objects designed to reflect a particular historic period, including vintage perfume bottles and decorative wall art. While maintaining familiar sentiments of femininity, romanticism, and decadence, her work subversively questions the influence of popular culture on identity formation.

Yomarie Silva-O’Neal (Alumni Artist in Residence 2010-2011)

Silva-O’Neal’s work strives to give viewers a new perspective on the order and rhythm in biological forms. Inspired by the work of turn-of-the-century biologist Ernst Haeckel, her practice includes the collection and investigation of small biological treasures.

Michael Gellatly (Project Artist in Residence 2013-2014)

Gellatly will present “Ice Plants and Other Post-Natural Varieties,” immediate works based on field-note style investigations of the Estate. Works include an ephemeral one night ice-construction as well as colorful mixed-media collages.
