Deering Estate Festival of the Arts "Plus One" Exhibition


(MIAMI, March 17, 2015) — On Saturday, April 11th, from 3:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the Deering Estate at Cutler presents the Deering Estate Festival of the Arts Plus One Exhibition. Within the unique invitational format of this year’s event, leading curators, gallerists and working artists in the South Florida Community collaborate to create site-specific works and performances at the Deering Estate. Events include an indoor and outdoor exhibit, a Curator’s and Artists’ Tour, a Literary Lounge, a Fire Circle Forum, and interactive activities for all ages.

Schedule of Events on Saturday, April 11th:

• 3:30 pm: Gates open, free and open to the public;
• 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm: Ongoing performances throughout the Estate (see description below);
• 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm: Curator’s Tour with Kim Yantis, Cultural Arts Program Coordinator;
• 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm: Literary Lounge featuring Literary Artists-in-Residence Nicole-Hospital Medina, Vanessa Garcia, C.M. Clark, and guests;
• 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm: Artists’ Exhibit Tour with participating artists;
• 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm: Fire Circle Forum with spontaneous performances.

Performances will include UnRaveled, a series of six intergenerational site-specific choreographed vignettes by Michelle Grant Murray that pay homage to Afro-Caribbean heritage and Miami; a contemporary Flamenco dance by Niurca E. Marquez in the Stone House Ballroom inspired by its historic Ramon Casas painting Ash Wednesday Procession in Barcelona; EBB/FLOW, a non-traditional dance duet, performed by Pioneer Winter and Marissa Alma Nick on a canoe in the Boat Basin, that examines balance in relationships; and mask and body art performances by FIU Honors College students, under Gretchen Scharnagl, that represent the transformation of the human body to animal form.

Additionally, from 3:30-9:00 p.m. a Courtyard Café will offer a select group of food and bar choices for a healthy, fresh picnic experience. Youth and families will also have the opportunity to explore and interact with art through the Photography Competition and Artful Scavenger Hunt. Participation will feature the opportunity to win prizes such as a digital camera and a family membership to the Deering Estate.

The Plus One Exhibit will be on display daily, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., from April 4 – May 20, 2015, and is free with Estate admission.
