Obesity and its health related consequences constitute some of the most challenging and costly public health threats currently facing our nation. Health care professionals are tasked to deliver not only medical care, but important information about chronic disease prevention strategies including physical activity and proper nutrition to maintain healthy weight, but are often challenged with time limitations during patient visits.

This presents a unique opportunity for healthcare providers to liaison with community partners to support the maintenance of healthy lifestyle behaviors. Specifically, the park setting and their park and recreation practitioners can provide a convenient and supportive locale/expertise for all family members to sustain their health and wellness efforts well beyond the doctor visit.

Walk with Ease Program

This program teaches you how to safely make physical activity part of your everyday life. You may use the workbook to guide you through the self-directed program, or you can participate in a six-week group program led by a trained leader. The information and strategies used are based on research and tested programs in exercise science, behavior change and arthritis management. The Arthritis Foundation states that in an evaluation by the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Institute on Aging at the University of North Carolina, the program increases balance, strength and walking pace, as well as reduces pain.
