Minimum Qualifications
High school. Three years of experience as a bank teller or cashier responsible for cash sums of money are required.
Job Specifications
NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible supervisory work in receiving and accounting for cash and negotiable instruments for the payment of taxes.

Work in this class includes the supervision of, and participation in, the processing of a large volume of financial transactions as payment for various taxes, fees and licenses. Work responsibilities not only include a high degree of rapidity and accuracy in money transactions, but also a knowledge of tax sources and tax laws. Work is performed with considerable independence and a high degree of responsibility within established departmental regulations and procedures. General administrative supervision is received from a superior and work is reviewed by reconciliation of bank statements and by periodic audits of cash records.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Supervises subordinate cashiers in receiving cash and checks, issuing receipts, and related cashiering work involved in the collection of taxes and fees.

Acts as central receiving agent for monies collected by several cashiers; prepares daily statements of cash and checks; prepares deposits and reconciles bank statements; maintains an individual collateral security control for all monies deposited.

Operates validating machines, cash registers, check endorsers and other similar office machines.

Keeps records of all cash receipts and disbursements; prepares monthly statements and balance sheets; checks reports from Auditing Department and reports received from Motor Vehicle Commissioner.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of cashiering.

Considerable knowledge of the legal, administrative and departmental procedural regulations including knowledge of pertinent statutes relating to tax collection and assessment.

Considerable knowledge of business arithmetic.

Considerable knowledge of office management.

Knowledge of office procedures, methods and equipment with particular reference to receiving and accounting for funds.

Knowledge of bookkeeping procedures and techniques.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of a unit or section of cashiers and clerks in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to make rapid and accurate arithmetical computations.

Ability to make effective decisions in the light of established procedures and resourcefulness in meeting new problems.

Ability to prepare and submit a variety of financial reports.

Ability to promote and maintain effective departmental and public relations.
