NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced technical work in job control language system documentation and maintenance of a library of system/programming documentation in a large centralized data processing operation.

Employees in this class are responsible for researching the existing job control language system, planning system development and drafting procedural guidelines for use in computer processing. Duties include reviewing submitted documentation for conformance to established standards, developing procedure manuals for production runs, instructing employees in job control language and controlling all data to update computerized libraries in the function of centralized cataloging. Related responsibilities include developing materials for guides for use by user agencies and coordinating changes in system documentation with affected departmental operations. Work is performed in accordance with established departmental data processing procedures, policies and standards, and employees may be required to work various shifts. Supervision is received from a technical superior who reviews work for effectiveness in applying significant knowledge of job control language to systems/programming documentation problems.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Researches the existing job control language system, plans system development and drafts procedural guidelines for use in computer processing.

Prepares and reviews system/job documentation for changes and conformance to established standards; prepares material for automated documentation and assures quality control for all new systems.

Prepares production run books for all new jobs, updates existing jobs and distributes run books to affected departmental operations.

Provides instruction to employees by conducting departmental training classes in data processing job control language.

Maintains integrity of procedure libraries and establishes procedures for control over all data to update computer libraries in the function of centralized cataloging.

Writes program user guides and operating procedures for use by user agencies in order to develop, standardize and regulate program formats and job control language for all jobs entering the computer.

Notifies various departmental operations of pending library change requirements and completion of procedure/library documentation changes.

Maintains a library of technical information for use by data processing personnel.

Checks audit reports for discrepancies of tape volumes.

Sets up parameter cards used in producing microfilm/fiche reports.

Maintains production statistics by frame/fiche, by job, which are used for billing purposes.

Contacts appropriate vendor in the event of equipment malfunctions.

Performs related work as required.

Considerable knowledge of job control language utilized in a central data processing operation.

Considerable knowledge of the procedures used in program documentation and job control.

Considerable knowledge of the documentation of computer processing jobs.

Considerable knowledge of the preparation of user guides and operating procedures for user agencies.

Knowledge of departmental cataloging procedures.

Knowledge of the general operating characteristics of computer hardware.

Knowledge of departmental policies, rules, regulations and procedures pertaining to the area of assignment.

Ability to review system/job documentation for changes and conformance to departmental standards.

Ability to write program user guides and production run books in an understandable manner, clearly and concisely.

Ability to analyze, adapt and standardize job control language in existing job systems.

Ability to read and understand technical procedural material.

Ability to maintain departmental cataloging procedures.

Ability to receive, maintain and distribute technical materials.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.

Ability to instruct employees in data processing job control language.

Ability to maintain production libraries and establish procedures for control over library functions.
