Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. Two years of laboratory experience in a hospital, medical examiner clinical laboratory are required.

NATURE OF WORK

This is technical work in managing chain-of-custody procedures for the Medical Examiner's Office.

An employee in this class is responsible for organizing and managing chain-of-custody procedures for all laboratory specimens and evidence in the Medical Examiner's toxicology laboratory. Responsibilities include organizing chain-of-custody procedures for receiving biological specimens and evidence, monitoring circulation of evidence within the laboratory, managing disposal of outdated specimens and evidence within the laboratory, ensuring the completion of pertinent documents, records and forms, and monitoring waste disposal procedures. The incumbent works independently within established forensic laboratory procedures to manage the laboratory specimen and evidence inventory. Supervision is received from a professional superior who reviews work for effective management of chain-of-custody procedures and satisfactory performance of related duties.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Organizes and manages chain-of-custody procedures for receiving biological specimens and evidence in accordance with strict forensic requirements.

Ensures the security and protection of specimens received.

Monitors chain-of-custody procedures for monitoring circulation of evidence within the laboratory.

Manages the disposal of all outdated specimens and evidence utilizing proper procedures in handling biohazardous materials.

Manages all files, documents, and computerized records that describe the receipt, storage, circulation, and disposal of all specimens and evidence received by the laboratory.

Manages laboratory waste disposal procedures for biohazardous waste materials, glassware, and chemicals in accordance with HRS and OSHA rules and regulations.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the organization and operations of the Medical Examiner's toxicology laboratory.

Considerable knowledge of chain-of-custody procedures for biological specimens and evidence.

Considerable knowledge of records, forms, files, and documents pertaining to the area of assignment.

Knowledge of HRS and OSHA rules pertaining to disposal of laboratory waste.

Knowledge of methods and techniques of protecting and securing laboratory specimens.

Ability to maintain a sound chain-of-custody.

Ability to effectively manage chain-of-custody procedures in a large and complex toxicology laboratory.

Ability to secure and protect laboratory specimens.

Ability to maintain records, files and documents.

Ability to organize and establish procedures to manage specimens and evidence inventory in a toxicology laboratory.
