Homeless Case Assistant
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. Two years of experience in providing social services are required.
Job Specifications
NATURE OF WORK

This is social service work in a County homeless assistance program.

Employees in this class are responsible for providing social/financial services to homeless citizens. Duties include performing field social services to indigent physically/mentally disabled clients who require a semi-structured living environment. Incumbents are responsible for determining program eligibility and making appropriate referrals to social service programs within the community. Supervision is received from an administrative superior who reviews work for conformance with established program policies and procedures.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Maintains an active client caseload as determined by program guidelines and standards.

Reviews client problems through intake interviews and maintains case files.

Refers clients to appropriate community resources and programs.

Participates in field work assessment and reviews authorized payments to boarding homes and shelters.

Closes and transfers cases to other County social service programs.

Completes and submits notices, forms, program reports and payment invoices according to program standards.

Periodically follows up on all referrals on active cases.

Provides transportation to shelters or County agencies, as necessary.

Attends meetings and training sessions.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the mission, goals and objectives of a County homeless assistance program.

Knowledge of basic interviewing techniques and practices.

Knowledge of recordkeeping requirements in the area of assignment.

Knowledge of public relations principles and techniques.

Knowledge of local social service programs and community resources.

Ability to obtain information through personal interviews and verbal communication.

Ability to establish and maintain rapport with homeless clients.

Ability to conduct client interviews and prepare effective problem assessments.

Ability to prepare a variety of forms and submit accurate reports.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
